Vanessa cardui (Linnaeus, 1758)   

 

Range: Cosmopolitan, all habitable continents except S America.

Distribution in Bulgaria: Everywhere, reaching over 2900 m a.s.l.. Migrant, not a permanent resident of the country.

Habitat: Not associated with any particular habitat type, can be met with virtually everywhere.

Bionomics: Varying number of generations according to environmental condtions. The first migrants reach Europe in the spring and breed continuously throughout the warm season until the first frosts. The larvae feed on a large number of plants belonging to at least seven families,among the most commonly used are thistles (Carduus, Cirsium) (Asteraceae) (Tolman & Lewington 1997).  

Conservation status: One of the most widespread and common butterflies in Bulgaria. IUCN category: Lower risk, least concern.
