Papilio machaon Linnaeus, 1758   

 

Range: N Africa, temperate and boreal Eurasia, N America (Alaska). The most widespread species of its family.

Distribution in Bulgaria: Widespread from sea level up to 1700 m, occasionally strays to over 2000 m.

Habitat: Diverse: bushy flowery glades and mountain slopes, forest margins, river valleys; common in urban and agricultural areas (orchards, parks, etc.).

Bionomics: One to three generations depending on altitude, from April till October. Larval host-plants: various Apiaceae.

Conservation status: A widespread species with stable populations.  IUCN category: Lower risk, least concern.
