Melitaea phoebe (Goeze, 1779)   

 

Systematics: An extremely variable taxon that actually contains more than one species, as has been shown for the very similar  Melitaea telona.

Range: Temperate Palearctic.

Distribution in Bulgaria: Widespread from sea level to ca. 1800 m; many records of "phoebe" from xerothermic areas at lower altitudes probably refer to M. telona.

Habitat: Various grassy and bushy places.

Bionomics: One or two generations from May till August. Larval host-plant: Centaurea (Tolman & Lewington 1997).

Conservation status: Widespread and common. IUCN category: Lower risk, least concern.
