Melitaea diamina (Lang, 1789)
Range: Temperate Eurasia from C Europe (retreating to mountains towards the S) to Japan.
Distribution in Bulgaria: Very poorly known, so far recorded from Rila, W Rhodopi and NE Bulgaria from 200 to 2000 m a.s.l.
Habitat: Wet grassy bushy glades and meadows, often in or near forests.
Bionomics: In Bulgaria probably has one generation from May to July. Larval host-plant: Valeriana (Tolman & Lewington 1997).
Conservation status: In Bulgaria apparently a very local and rare species, which needs dedicated research. IUCN category: Data Deficient, possibly Vulnerable. Threatened in many regions of Europe. Its inclusion into the Red Data Book of Bulgaria is herewith recommended.
