Melitaea athalia (Rottemburg, 1775)   

Name in Tolman & Lewington (1997): Mellicta athalia
 

Range: Temperate Eurasia.

Distribution in Bulgaria: Widespread up to 2200 m a.s.l. Very variable, some specimens can be confused with Melitaea aurelia and Melitaea britomartis.

Habitat: Grassy bushy woodland margins, roads, clearings and glades, river valleys, mountain slopes etc.

Bionomics: One generation from June till August, under favourable conditions a partial second generation may occur in September. Larval host-plant: Plantago, Veronica, Linaria etc. (Tolman & Lewington 1997).

Conservation status: Of no concern. IUCN category: Lower risk, least concern.
