Iphiclides podalirius (Linnaeus, 1758)   


Range: From S France across S and C Europe and Asia Minor to Altai Mts.

Distribution in Bulgaria: Widespread from sea level to about 1600 m.

Habitat: Bushy flowery glades, forest margins, river valleys; common in urban and agricultural areas (orchards, parks, etc.).

Bionomics: One to three generations depending on altitude, from April till October. Larval host-plants: wild and cultivated Rosaceae (Prunus, Malus, Pyrus, Crataegus etc.) (Tolman & Lewington 1997). For this reason considered (unjustly) an agricultural pest in Bulgaria.

Conservation status: Widespread and common. IUCN category: Lower risk, least concern.
