Euphydryas aurinia (Rottemburg, 1775)   

 

Systematics: Extremely variable, some forms and subspecies are considered specificall distinct by some authors.

Range: C and E Europe, temperate W Asia.

Distribution in Bulgaria: Very local mainly in mountains (E Stara Planina, Vitosha, Rila, Pirin, Rhodopi) but also along the S Black Sea coast, from sea level up to 2000 m.

Habitat: Grassy glades and meadows in woodland and along its margins.

Bionomics: One generation from April till July, dependidng on altitude. Larval host-plants: Succisa pratensis, Scabiosa, Gentiana lutea, Lonicera periclymenum etc. (Tolman & Lewington 1997).

Conservation status: The status of this very local and relatively rare species in Bulgaria needs dedicated research. IUCN category: Data  Deficient, possibly Vulnerable. Listed in Appendix II of the Bern Convention (CITES) and The Red Data Book of European Butterflies as Vulnerable. Its inclusion into the Red Data Book of Bulgaria is herewith recommended.
