Erebia gorge (Hübner, [1804])   


Range: Endemic to Europe; occurs in most higher mountains from the Pyrenees to the Carpathians and the C Balkan Peninsula.

Distribution in Bulgaria: On and in the immediate vicinity of the highest peaks of Rila (Musala) and Pirin (Vihren), not below 2500 m. This species has the highest resident range of any butterfly in Bulgaria.

Habitat: Stony alpine habitats with very scant vegetation.

Bionomics: One generation flying from the end of July till September.  Larval host-plants: grasses (Poaceae) (Tolman & Lewington 1997).

Conservation status: The most local Erebia in the country. As such, and despite not being directly threatened at present, it has to be considered vulnerable. IUCN category: Vulnerable. Its inclusion into the Red Data Book of Bulgaria is herewith recommended.
