Colias hyale (Linnaeus, 1758)

Range: Europe except the Mediterranean, temperate Asia.

Distribution in Bulgaria: Poorly known, as older sources have not discriminated between this and the very similar species Colias alfacariensis. The only certain published locality is Razgrad (leg. I. Stoytchev, Abadjiev 1992). According to unpublished material in my collection the distribution of this species comprises N and W Bulgaria.

Habitat: Grassy bushy places, alfalfa fields.

Bionomics: Two or three generations from May till October. Larval host-plants: alfalfa (Medicago sativa) and other Fabaceae (Tolman & Lewington 1997).

Conservation status: The distribution and status of this species in Bulgaria needs further research. IUCN category: Data Deficient.
