Plebeius artaxerxes (Fabricius, 1793)

Name in Tolman & Lewington (1997): Aricia artaxerxes

Male, Rila Mts.

Systematics: This taxon is very closely related to the previous species and frequently confused with it, e.g. in older Bulgarian literature. Furthermore, in recent years it is separated by some authors into two or more separate species but in my opinion  without sufficient reasons.

Range: Temperate Eurasia.

Distribution in Bulgaria: So far known from the mountains Vitosha, Rila, W Rhodopi, Pirin and Alibotush at altitudes between 600 and 2000 m. Its occurrence on other Bulgarian high mountains is probable.

Habitat: Grassy, flowery places usually near woodland.

Bionomics: One generation from June till August. Larval host-plants: Erodium, Geranium (Geraniaceae) and Helianthemum (Cistaceae) (Tolman & Lewington 1997).

Conservation status: Further research on the distribution and population dynamics of this local species in Bulgaria are necessary. In view of the wide availability of suitable habitats can hardly be considered of immediate concern. IUCN category: Data Deficient, possibly Lower risk, near threatened.

Male, Pirin Mts.
