Araschnia levana (Linnaeus, 1758)   

 

Range: Temperate Palearctic.

Distribution in Bulgaria: Widespread in lowlands and lower mountain slopes and valleys from sea level up to 1000 m, but reaches up to 1600 m (personal observations).

Habitat: Semi-open, often damp ruderal habitats such as road and path verges with growths of the larval host plant.

Bionomics: Two generations, differing greatly in morphology, in April-May (light seasonal form levana), and July-August (dark seasonal form prorsa). Larval host plant: Urtica.

Conservation status: IUCN category: Lower risk, least concern.
